he Washington Thoroughbred
Breeders Association held their annual winter mixed sale on Sunday, December 2,
at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald Downs racetrack in
Auburn.
Auburn residents Mike and Amy Feuerborn, who
raced 2007 WTBA Lads Stakes winner Gallon, purchased the sale topper, a
Kentucky-bred colt sired by national freshman stallion Sky Mesa, for $24,000
from the Woodstead Farm consignment. The half-brother to San Vicente Stakes
(G2) winner Archer City Slew was one of 82 yearlings which sold for a $3,694
average. The second highest priced individual selling was also a yearling, a
half-brother to 2006 Washington champion three-year-old filly Shes All
Silk. The Free At LastShimmer of Silk colt was purchased by Al Strumecki
of Edmonton, Alberta, for $20,000 from the consignment of Rick and Debbie
Pabsts Blue Ribbon Farm. Also of interest among the yearlings selling was
a filly by Washington leading juvenile and freshman sire Polish Gift out of
Poker Knight who was purchased by the newly incorporated Doo-Dah Stable LLC,
the nom de course for first-time horse owner Ralph Vacca longtime
general manager of the WTBA who retires on December 31 and Kenneth
Alhadeff.
A weanling filly from the second crop of Grade 2
stakes winner Even the Score topped the 17 foals of 2007 sold. The February
filly was purchased by Claudia Atwell Canouse, agent, for $19,000 from the
Woodstead Farm consignment.
Two broodmares sold for $15,000 or more.
Thirteen-year-old Inspired Verse, dam of Washington champion Jumron Won, sold
bred to Matty G for $15,500. Amar Jeet Jatana purchased the daughter of Opening
Verse from the Prisco Vacca Farm. Full Scream Ahead, a stakes winner of
$319,550 bred to Cahill Road was purchased by Robert M. Clements,
agent, for Abed Itan for $15,000 from the Blue Ribbon Farm consignment for Fell
Hill Farm. The 29 broodmares sold averaged $3,517.
Eight horses of racing age averaged $988, while
two stallion shares were sold for a $350 average. The lone stallion entered,
Just Ruler, brought $1,500.
A total of 218 horses and stallion shares were
consigned to the event which saw 139 individuals change hands for $460,500 and
a $3,313 average. Overall, the average dropped 8.7 percent and the median went
down dramatically from $2,200 in 2006 to $1,000 in 2007.
