WTBA Winter Mixed Sale

COMPLETE RESULTS

The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association held their annual winter mixed sale on Sunday, December 2, at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald Downs racetrack in Auburn.

Auburn residents Mike and Amy Feuerborn, who raced 2007 WTBA Lads Stakes winner Gallon, purchased the sale topper, a Kentucky-bred colt sired by national freshman stallion Sky Mesa, for $24,000 from the Woodstead Farm consignment. The half-brother to San Vicente Stakes (G2) winner Archer City Slew was one of 82 yearlings which sold for a $3,694 average. The second highest priced individual selling was also a yearling, a half-brother to 2006 Washington champion three-year-old filly She’s All Silk. The Free At Last—Shimmer of Silk colt was purchased by Al Strumecki of Edmonton, Alberta, for $20,000 from the consignment of Rick and Debbie Pabst’s Blue Ribbon Farm. Also of interest among the yearlings selling was a filly by Washington leading juvenile and freshman sire Polish Gift out of Poker Knight who was purchased by the newly incorporated Doo-Dah Stable LLC, the nom de course for first-time horse owner Ralph Vacca – longtime general manager of the WTBA who retires on December 31 – and Kenneth Alhadeff.

A weanling filly from the second crop of Grade 2 stakes winner Even the Score topped the 17 foals of 2007 sold. The February filly was purchased by Claudia Atwell Canouse, agent, for $19,000 from the Woodstead Farm consignment.

Two broodmares sold for $15,000 or more. Thirteen-year-old Inspired Verse, dam of Washington champion Jumron Won, sold bred to Matty G for $15,500. Amar Jeet Jatana purchased the daughter of Opening Verse from the Prisco Vacca Farm. Full Scream Ahead, a stakes winner of $319,550 – bred to Cahill Road – was purchased by Robert M. Clements, agent, for Abed Itan for $15,000 from the Blue Ribbon Farm consignment for Fell Hill Farm. The 29 broodmares sold averaged $3,517.

Eight horses of racing age averaged $988, while two stallion shares were sold for a $350 average. The lone stallion entered, Just Ruler, brought $1,500.

A total of 218 horses and stallion shares were consigned to the event which saw 139 individuals change hands for $460,500 and a $3,313 average. Overall, the average dropped 8.7 percent and the median went down dramatically from $2,200 in 2006 to $1,000 in 2007.
