1999 Winter Mixed Sale Average Up
ranger Express, a yearling colt
by Seattle Slew's successful siring son Slewdledo, brought $33,000 to top the
1999 WTBA Winter Mixed Sale held at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion at
Emerald Downs on December 5. Halvorson Bloodstock sold the colt on behalf of
David Parks of Seattle to owner Ron Nalley and trainer Jeff Bonde, who came
from California for the auction. Granger Express is a half-brother to $70,788
stakes filly Knight's Secretary out of a half-sister to Washington horse of the
year Hilco Scamper. Webber Crest Farm of Issaquah
sold the next highest priced Thoroughbred, a yearling colt by Basket Weave, to
Curt and Lila Lanning of California for $26,000.
The highest priced filly was Devil's Opinion, a
yearling by Devil On Ice, which Dick Todd sold as agent. Jim Brown, as agent,
purchased her for $23,000 for the account of Rodger Lam of British Columbia.
Dr. Mark Dedomenico bought the highest priced
broodmare, Marquita's First, a daughter of Moscow Ballet in foal to Jumron
(GB), for $20,000. Woodstead Farm sold her as agent.
Highest priced weanling was a full brother to stakes
winner A.J. Jett that Lou Tice purchased for $15,000 through trainer David
Doutrich from the consignment of Feenstra Farm.
Final figures showed the auction average to be up 9
percent from last year's similar vendue. "Most of
the consignors are happy with the results," said WTBA president Jerry Woods.
"And the buyers liked what they bought. It was a good sale," he felt.
