The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association held their annual winter mixed sale on Sunday, December 6, at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald Downs Racetrack in Auburn.

The sale topper came early in the proceedings as Hip 115, a weanling filly from the first crop El Dorado Farms LLC’s stallion Raise the Bluff out of stakes producer Seattle Seamstress was purchased by Edward and Theresa DeNike of Kent for $30,000. The half-sister to 2008 Washington champion three-year-old filly Enumclaw Girl was sold by Candi Tollett as agent for the dispersal of Doris Konecny’s Czech-Mate Farm of Enumclaw. The gray or roan filly’s second dam was Washington champion race filly Mahaska. A total of 17 weanlings sold for a $2,371 average, considerably up from the six that averaged $950 in 2008.

Next up were 16 horses of racing age, of which 14 sold for a $1,343 average, up 34.3 percent from 2008’s $1,000 average. The most expensive horse in this category was Hip 214, a two-year-old filly named Tana Montana which was purchased by Delores Hammer of Stanwood for $4,500. The daughter of Tribunal out of stakes producer Nifty Purchase was consigned by Steve and Sally Meredith’s Lucky Acres of Yakima.

Twenty-seven of the 45 yearlings consigned sold for an average of $1,119, down 55.9 percent from 2008’s $2,537 figure. Candi Tollett again consigned the top selling individual, this time as agent for Horse Haven Creek. The You and I—Arville filly was purchased by Lake Tapps resident Dennis Snowden, as agent, for $4,000.

The highest priced broodmare selling was 15-year-old Seattle Seamstress, the dam of the sell topper who was carrying a full sibling to the $30,000 filly. One of 17 offerings in the Czech-Mate dispersal, Seattle Seamstress was purchased by Melissa Martin and Lynne Kelsey of Everson for $2,000. The 25 of the 34 broodmares and broodmare prospects sold for a $424 average, down almost 70 percent from the 16 mares offered at the 2008 sale.

A total of 114 horses and two stallion shares were consigned to the annual December sale. After 12 withdrawals (10.3 percent), and 20 RNAs (reserves not attained) (nine percent), a total of 84 hips were sold for $100,000, for a $1,190 average (down 40.9 percent) and $500 median (down 31.9 percent).
