Full Sister to 2008 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes Winner Tops WTBA Summer SaleThe Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association's annual summer yearlings sale was held on September 2 at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington. Topping this year's edition was a filly sired by sprint champion Cherokee Run who was purchased by David and Jill Heerensperger for $92,000. The filly's full sister, two-year-old Cherokee Echo - a 2007 WTBA sale graduate - had won the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes at Emerald Downs just two days prior to the sale. The Heerenspergers also purchased the fourth highest offering, a filly by You and I out the young stakes-winning mare Cascade Corona, which sold for $45,000. The filly was consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Frederick L. Pabst, who also bred Cascade Corona's graded stakes-placed half-brother, Son's Corona, who raced for the Heerenspergers. El Dorado Farms LLC consigned the second and third highest selling yearlings. Mark Dedomenico LLC of Redmond went to $50,000 to acquire a City Zip filly out of Stormbow, a stakes-producing daughter of the great sire Storm Cat, from their consignment. The Enumclaw-based El Dorado also sold a half-brother to $220,000 stakes winner Indian Weaver, who is from the final crop of four-time leading Washington sire Slewdledo, for $47,000. The colt was purchased by California trainer Jeff Bonde as agent. Overall, the sales numbers were down significantly. Of the 215 yearlings consigned, 199 went through the sales ring with 114 selling for a $1,317,300 total and an $11,555 average, a 23.6 percent drop from 2007 sale figures. The sale median was $6,750, down 43.8 percent from the 2007 $12,000 median. As with most of the nation's sales, RNAs (those runners whose reserves were not attained) jumped dramatically, with the Washington sale attaining 42.7 percent buybacks, an all-time high.
