2006 WTBA Summer Yearling Sale
Summary and Comparison

The 40th edition of the WTBA Summer Yearling Sale saw 215 individuals cataloged for sale on Tuesday, September 5 at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion located at Emerald Downs racetrack in Auburn, WA. Of that number, 205 went through the sales ring and 153 changed hands.

Both the highest priced colt and filly are offspring of Kentucky Derby-G1 winners. The sale topper came early in the day. Cataloged as Hip 14, the Thunder Gulch colt out of multiple Emerald Downs stakes winner Ropersandwranglers from the Northwest Farms LLC consignment was purchased by California trainer Jeff Bonde for $75,000. Northwest Farms also sold the second highest priced individual – and top selling filly – Hip 64, a daughter of Monarchos, the first foal from an unraced half-sister to stakes winner Strong Credentials, who was purchased by Enumclaw, WA agent Dana Halvorson for $62,000. Northwest Farms, nom de course for Yakima businessman Jerre Paxton, sold four of the top eight yearlings in the September venue.

Top buyer (by gross) was longtime horseman and Oregon businessman Art McFadden who bought eight yearlings for a total of $184,000.

Overall, the numbers for the sale were disappointing, as the $15,397 average was down by 14.3 percent over last year’s $17,959 and the median declined from $14,250 in 2005 to $10,000 in 2006, a drop of 29.8 percent. Gross sales were also down 12.6 percent, as sales totaled $2,355,800 versus $2,693,900 in 2005. While outs were nearly half of the 2005 figure (10 vs. 19), RNAs increased by nine horses (52 vs. 43) to 25.4 percent.
