A Spotty WTBA Winter Mixed Sale
good crowd and good weather failed to produce good
results for most consignors at the annual WTBA Winter Sale on December 4. The
gross receipts and average prices were down significantly from last years
venue, but as usual, the horses fancied most fetched good prices, while the
majority of others did not. All told, the sale grossed $634,000 for the 197
head that changed hands, an average of $3,218 each.
Most significant of those purchases were hip
numbers 164 and 180. The first of those to pass through the ring was a grand
looking yearling colt by Free At Last--Northern Whirl that brought a high bid
of $38,000 from Frank Gaunt of Covington, Washington. The sales topping colt
was consigned by Griffin Place, agent, on behalf of Robin Mason and Stormy
Hull. It should be noted that the buyer also bought the top-priced yearling at
the same sale last year.
The next highest price of $25,000 was for an
11-year-old broodmare named Prados Joy. She is in foal, carrying a full
sibling to Washington-bred champion Spanish Highway. She was offered by Blue
Ribbon Farm, agent, on behalf of Fell Hill Farm, and was purchased by Ron
Stolich of California.
