2004 Winter Mixed Sale Recapn what is perhaps best described as a spotty market, mixed reviews were on tap at the annual Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association Winter Mixed Sale on Sunday, December 5. As is the norm these days, young racing prospects with the complete package of pedigree and pizzazz bring the big bucks. The others are on the fringes. The sale topper at $40,000 was hip #98, a California-bred yearling filly by General Meeting--Secret Advice R.N. that went home with Frank Gaunt of Covington, WA. She was consigned by Dr. Mark Dedominico, a prominent cardiovascular surgeon who operates Woods Creek Training Center in Monroe. Next in line were two yearlings which sold for $30,000 each. First, hip #154, a colt by popular Kentucky sire Smart Strike, sold to Mike Puhich, a local horseman from the days of Longacres who now competes on the California circuit. Shortly afterwards, hip # 177, a yearling filly by Meadowlake, sold for $30,000 to W. Morris Peter of Vancouver, British Columbia. There were a number of quality broodmares on offer and the top seller was hip #210, Miss Pixie, a multiple stakes winner of over $300,000 who sold for $24,000. Miss Pixie was part of the dispersal of J. C. Marshall who died earlier this month. The buyer was top local trainer Howard Belvoir (agent). Total sale receipts of $878,050 was up 20.26% from last year's figures while averages were down in most categories. Click here for COMPLETE RESULTS
