WTBA Summer Yearling Sale
Posts Modest Increase

The 37th annual Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s Summer Yearling Sale, held September 2, posted a moderate increase over last year in total receipts, while the average price remained about constant. Perhaps most importantly was the increase registered (6.7 percent) in median price, that is the number for which half the horses sold for a higher figure and half sold for a lower total. Equally impressive was the decrease in the number of horses that were not sold (RNA). That figure represents a significant decrease (30 percent) from the totals of one year ago. Final numbers show 156 horses sold (up 8.3 percent from last year), for a 2,482,500 gross (plus 4.7 percent), with a median purchase price of $12,000.

The sale topper at $105,000 was hip number 192, a strapping Kentucky-bred son of Honor Grades from the stakes-winning matron Taj Aire who was consigned by Enumclaw nursery Czech-Mate Thoroughbreds, Sisimito, agent. After a spirited bidding duel, he went home with Eric Kruljac, agent for Mitchell Ranch LLC of Parks, Arizona.

Next in line, and the highest priced filly, was hip number 89, a daughter of Tale of the Cat—Jamaican Me Smile. The powerfully built chestnut fetched a final bid of $75,000. A Kentucky-bred, but raised by her consignor, Northwest Farms of Yakima, she was purchased by Robert Amendola of Brookville, NY.

Final figures indicate Amendola was the leading buyer with six purchases for a total of $169,000. Kruljac bought five for a total of $163,500.
