Colt by Devil’s Bag Tops
WTBA Winter Sale

Bill Feeley of Roscoe, Montana, went to $37,000 to purchase a colt by former national two-year-old champion Devil’s Bag to top the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s Winter Mixed Sale, held December 2 at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavillion at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington. Bella Bloodstock, acting on behalf of Northwest Farms, sold the colt who is a half-brother to 2001 Emerald Express Stakes winner Melcapwalker.

A total of 234 Thoroughbreds sold for $899,900, averaging $3,846, down 11% from last year’s similar auction. Yearlings averaged $4,991, broodmares averaged $1,850 and weanlings averaged $2,437.

Highest priced weanling was a colt by Slewdledo which Dave and Elaine Parks bought for $11,500 from Woods Creek Training Center, acting as agent for Darlene Trask.

Highest priced broodmare was $72,953 winner Maxter, by Fast Play, in foal to Tough Knight. Trainer Thomas Wenzel purchased her for $7,200 for his client, Karl Krieg of Oak Harbor.

The one statistic which remained the same was the $2,200 median price, or the price at which half of the horses sold above and below. It was exactly the same as last year.
